Google AI Max: test growth without losing control

New testing tools and changing upgrade dates deserve a careful reading. Here is how we would approach the September 2026 changes with a business owner's budget in mind.

Google announced new AI Max testing and planning capabilities on August 20, with testing updates rolling out in September 2026. Separately, its updated migration notice moves the start of Dynamic Search Ads auto-upgrades to February 2027.

Those are different changes. A rollout of testing tools is not the same as a deadline to migrate an existing campaign. Reading them as one event can lead a team to rush decisions that deserve a controlled experiment.

The following checklist is LineWeb's independent approach to evaluating a campaign change. It is not a forecast of what any account will achieve.

Automation becomes more useful when the business is precise about what a good result looks like.
Practical framework

Start with the measurement, not the switch.

Before testing broader automation, make sure the experiment can answer a business question.

01

Define a useful lead

A submitted form and a commercially relevant enquiry are not automatically the same thing.

02

Set the boundaries

Agree a budget ceiling, eligible destinations and who can approve campaign changes.

03

Keep a comparison

Record the baseline and use an experiment structure that makes the result interpretable.

What is new

More ways to test before scaling

Google's August announcement describes A/B testing of budgets and ROI targets across multiple Search campaigns, expanded AI Max experiment controls for brands and locations, and Performance Planner forecasts for bidding and budget changes.

Our interpretation: these capabilities can support a more deliberate decision process. A forecast should inform a discussion, not be treated as a guaranteed return or permission to increase spending without approval.

Important date correction

Not every upgrade happens in September

The revised DSA auto-upgrade start is February 2027.

Google's June 11 update extends the Dynamic Search Ads sunset and auto-upgrade timeline. Automatically Created Assets and campaign-level broad match upgrades remain scheduled for September 2026. The updated body of the announcement matters more than its older summary.

For an existing account, we would first inventory the campaign types and settings actually in use. A deadline that applies to one configuration should not become a reason to change every campaign in the account.

LineWeb's practical approach

Design an experiment you can learn from

Start with a written hypothesis: for example, whether a broader matching approach can bring additional qualified enquiries within an agreed acquisition cost. Decide how qualification will be assessed and how long the sales cycle requires you to wait.

Avoid changing the offer, landing page, conversion definitions and bidding approach at the same time. If everything changes, a better or worse result tells you very little about the cause. Seasonality and conversion delays also belong in the interpretation.

Review the destination pages before expanding reach. Someone arriving from a more varied query still needs to understand the service, its limits and the next step. A relevant click that reaches a confusing page is an avoidable loss.

  • Check conversion recording and consent-dependent measurement limitations.
  • Agree the primary metric and a stop or review threshold.
  • Review lead quality with the team handling the enquiries.
  • Keep a dated change log and allow for conversion lag.
  • Scale only when the evidence supports the business case.
Beyond the campaign

Advertising and the website need to work together

Our digital marketing work connects campaign decisions with landing pages, tracking and follow-up. The aim is a clearer acquisition process, not a busier dashboard.

Questions people ask

Clear answers, without the jargon.

01Are Dynamic Search Ads automatically upgrading in September 2026?+

Google's June 11 update moves the start of DSA auto-upgrades to February 2027. Other legacy-feature upgrade schedules differ, so inspect the account and the updated notice.

02Does Performance Planner guarantee a return?+

No. Treat planning estimates as inputs to a decision, not guaranteed results. Set spending limits and assess observed business outcomes.

03Should every campaign use the same test?+

No. Our recommendation is to choose a test around the account's goals, available data and commercial constraints. Low-volume campaigns may need a different evaluation approach.
