Can AI voice agents handle your customer enquiries?
Google's Gemini 3.8 Live update brings fresh attention to voice AI. The opportunity for a business is not a voice that sounds clever. It is a customer who gets useful help.

Yes, for a well-defined set of enquiries with reliable information and a human fallback. No, not as an unrestricted replacement for every conversation your team handles. Start with the questions you already know how to answer consistently.
Google's September announcement introduces Gemini 3.8 Live and Live Extended Thinking, describing more fluid voice interaction and background tool use. Availability differs across developer products and enterprise previews. A model announcement is not a finished receptionist connected to your business.
The following examples are LineWeb's implementation recommendations. They are hypothetical workflows, not claims that Google has shipped these exact services for your company.
The handover to a person is part of the experience, not an admission that the system failed.
Begin where the answer can be trusted.
Choose a task with a clear information source, a limited action and an obvious next step.
Routine questions
Approved opening hours, service areas and appointment preparation, with a named owner keeping the information current.
Structured enquiries
Collect only the details needed to route a request or prepare a callback, without promising an unapproved outcome.
Human handover
Transfer uncertainty, complaints and exceptional requests to someone who can make the decision.
Better conversation does not remove integration work
Google says its new Live models can continue a conversation while tools run in the background. Its rollout notes list developer access through the Gemini API and AI Studio, with separate enterprise private previews and further product availability still to come.
For an owner, the practical distinction is between understanding a request and fulfilling it. A voice model cannot reliably confirm an appointment from an outdated document. It needs an authorised connection to the actual schedule, rules about what it may book and a response when the booking fails.
Google: Gemini 3.8 Live announcement and rollout notesWhat an after-hours enquiry assistant could do
Imagine a local installation company receiving questions outside office hours. A limited assistant could explain the service area, ask what kind of work is needed and prepare a callback request. It should not diagnose a dangerous situation or invent a final price.
The enquiry can then enter the existing CRM with an assigned owner and a concise summary. The caller should receive a realistic explanation of the next step, not a promise of a callback deadline the business cannot meet. If information is missing, the workflow should preserve that uncertainty.
Booking is a separate extension. Before offering it, establish how the calendar handles travel time, different services, cancellations and two requests for the same slot. Confirmation should follow a successful booking transaction, not simply an optimistic sentence from the assistant.
- One approved source for service information and policies.
- A small, agreed set of enquiry fields.
- A real CRM or scheduling connection where required.
- An explicit outcome for unavailable systems and ambiguous requests.
Test the awkward conversations
A quiet demo with a prepared script tells you little about a hurried customer. Test interruptions, background noise, regional accents, names, dates and switches between Greek and English. Language support should not be confused with proven accuracy on your customers' calls.
Let the caller know they are interacting with an automated assistant and make access to a person straightforward. Decide whether audio or transcripts are needed at all, who can access them and when they are removed. Review the applicable privacy requirements for the actual deployment rather than assuming that using a major provider makes it compliant.
For a pilot, review completed tasks, wrong commitments, repeat calls and successful handovers. A shorter call is not necessarily a better call if the customer has to contact you again. Keep an easy way to pause the assistant while the normal contact route remains available.
- Try real questions, not only the questions in the demo.
- Check that names, dates and contact details are confirmed correctly.
- Escalate sensitive or consequential decisions.
- Assess the whole journey, including the human follow-up.
You may need a better form before you need voice AI
If most enquiries arrive through mobile web forms and your team responds promptly, voice may not be the first investment. A clearer form, structured routing or an improved knowledge base could solve the problem with less operational complexity.
Where voice is justified, budget for the communication channel, model usage, integrations, monitoring and human fallback. Ask how silence, long conversations, retries and failed transfers affect costs. A scoped pilot should establish whether the additional access helps customers and the team before expanding hours or responsibilities.
Make every useful enquiry reach the right place
LineWeb builds CRM and business systems that give enquiries an owner, a stage and a next action. Those foundations matter whether a request arrives by form, phone or an AI-assisted experience.
Explore CRM and business systemsClear answers, without the jargon.
01Can an AI voice agent book appointments?+
It can be designed to do so when connected to an authorised scheduling system with availability rules and reliable confirmation. A conversational model alone is not a booking system.
02Can it answer customers in Greek?+
Assess the chosen model and product, then test the actual vocabulary, accents, names and noise conditions your customers bring. Do not promise quality based only on a supported-language list.
03Should AI replace our reception or support team?+
Our recommended starting point is support for a narrow set of repeat enquiries, with people retaining responsibility for exceptions and consequential decisions.
04What is the best first pilot?+
A repeatable task with approved answers, limited data collection and a clear handover, such as preparing an after-hours callback request. Agree the success criteria before choosing the technology.
